Motorcycle Safety Tips

Posted by on Aug 15, 2019 in Motor Vehicle Collisions

If you’ve recently started riding a motorcycle, you already know that it takes some getting used to. This rings especially true if you’re making the transition from car to bike.

Proper motorcycle safety is vital for any biker out on the road. New bikers don’t have as much experience as their seasoned counterparts, making them that much more vulnerable to accidents. Here are some of the most common issues faced by new bikers, along with a few tips and tricks that may help mitigate some of the issues:

Road Rash

Road rash occurs when the skin comes into contact with an extremely abrasive surface, such as an uneven road. Bikers run a risk of developing a rash if they fall and scrape their skin on the ground. Proper clothing, such as jackets, gloves, and long pants can help reduce the irritation caused by road rash.

Traumatic Brain Injury

There is reason cars come with seatbelts! A high-impact collision can spell disaster for a driver, and people on motorcycles can be seriously injured or even killed in a crash due to the lack of seatbelts. A helmet that covers the biker’s entire face is the number-one way to reduce the risk of traumatic brain injuries occurring after a collision.

This one may not be as severe of an injury as the others on this list, but it’s still unpleasant nonetheless. Bikers should always wear sunscreen when riding as they have no tinted windows protecting them from the sun’s harmful rays.

High-impact Collisions

While a collision that occurs at a low speed is dangerous, a high-speed accident is often fatal for someone riding a motorcycle on the highway. As such, it’s imperative that bikers remain vigilant when they’re on the highway. Many drivers experience inattentional blindness while driving, leading to fender benders and other accidents. Because of the increased vulnerability that bikers have, they’re more likely to be killed by these minor accidents, and it’s usually best for bikers to wait for a break in traffic before going out on the highway.

While I highly recommend taking as many safety precautions as possible before setting out on the road, there’s only so much that a biker can do to ensure his or her safety. Often, dangerous drivers can cause accidents by failing to give the motorcycle ample room to move, and the bikers are often rear-ended as a result. When this happens, it has deadly consequences for the biker.

If you’re a biker that has been hurt due to a driver failing to pay attention to his or her surroundings, don’t hesitate to pursue legal action with a law firm like McCutchen & Sexton. One accident can cause serious injury to you and your bike, something that you shouldn’t be responsible for. Getting in contact with a lawyer who can help you reach a settlement that will help you get back on your feet is just the first step of many that you’ll need to take to get your life back in order.
